Lately, I've been reflecting upon my personal journey of self improvement and personal growth, and casting my mind back to where it began. Who can tell for sure when that was - maybe we are all born with a desire to constantly evolve (whether we realise it or not).
My thoughts settled on my late teens and early twenties. I recall reading the available literature at the time and immersing in things that my family probably thought were pretty weird. I used to draw astrological and other-worldly images, listen to "alternative" music and I had an altar in my bedroom where I completely freaked everyone out and burned incense and candles. I even enrolled in Tai Chi training (before yoga came onto my radar).
My favourite thing to do was to explore nature with my bestie. We'd sit atop massive boulders in the middle of nowhere and write poetry to each other. We'd swim in natural rivers and hike through rainforests, climb sacred beachside hills and gaze longingly out to sea or into campfires, the moon and the stars. Not to mention sing and dance and laugh like silly buggers.
At the same time, I also had my feet pretty firmly planted on the ground with 4 younger siblings at home, an indie rock band and a couple of uni degrees to keep me busy. Yet I have always had my mind's eye fixed upon the mystical and the unknown and I wanted to learn more.
Over the years that passed and now into my forties, I am constantly learning more, evolving and changing with each new understanding.
As a therapist I have learned various philosophies, methodologies and approaches with some pretty varied ideas about how things work and how to get the most out of myself and life itself. I've been incredibly fortunate to have travelled the world and studied with some of the best teachers. Arts, culture, literature, society, media, theology, education, music, sound, psychology, humanity, health. The list goes on. I've explored the human brain, fallen in love with neuroscience and metacognition - the sciencey name for mindfulness. I've tried out pretty much every form of yoga and despite having two long term extraordinary yoga teachers, I have learnt that the best guru is the loving voice within.
Yet despite having that inner wellspring of wisdom always at the ready, I also believe strongly that sometimes we need the loving guidance of wonderful teachers or healers to remind us that in this amazing life, there is always so much more to uncover.
So in order to up-level and to keep evolving, we need to adopt the beginner's mind.
Nothing has taught me this more strongly of late, than my new meditation practice. I am learning more about myself, my patterns, my motivations and my needs and more about how things work than ever, by practising openness to becoming more aware.
Curiosity... Openness... and Awareness.
From here, we can not only up-level, we can fly.
I would love to share with you my practice in cultivating greater states of awareness.
